About the project
The secret history of Bicester.
Breckon & Breckon's Bicester office, located at 30 Market Square, is housed in a building with a fascinating hidden history. Although it appeared to be a 1960s-era office on the surface, its origins were revealed during refurbishment to be much older. The building was originally constructed in 1751, over 273 years ago. This discovery altered the design plans, leading to a more historically sympathetic renovation that embraced the building's evolution through four distinct periods.
The design incorporated elements that referenced architectural styles from various eras. For example, Crittall windows, which date back over 140 years, were used alongside lime mortar for pointing, a practice that has existed for centuries. The design also featured herringbone flooring, popular among nobility in the 1600s, and wall panelling—a technique that dates back to the 13th century and became widely used during the Tudor period to insulate stone-built homes.
Our history with Breckon & Breckon.
We carried out our first refurbishment for Breckon & Breckon in 2007 12 years ago since then we have successfully refurbished 8 of their offices. Bicester being the most recent one.
Our Bicester office opened in May 2023 to much acclaim. Clever lighting enhanced the many period features, and VisCom’s spectacular modern desks perfectly complemented the look. Taking a bespoke stance on all our offices is more expensive but pays off in the long run due to the high quality of manufacture from Vis-Com. A perfect example is our city centre office on Oxford’s famous High Street which Vis-Com is refurbishing for us 18 years after their initial fit-out.
